AN INTERVIEW WITH ANDREW, CUSTOM CYCLES LTD

We interviewed Andrew, the owner of Custom Cycles, LTD in Greensboro North Carolina. Aside from having all the parts and accessories you could dream of, they build top-of-the-line custom cycles. Our Biker Babes for the month, Paige and Jordan, did some modeling next to custom creations from Andrew's shop.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD YOUR BUSINESS?

Since '05, so about ten years.

HOW'D YOU GET STARTED?

I'd just got my first motorcycle and then it went downhill from there, ya know? (*laughs*) Then I bought another one and another one, then started working on other people's and stuff like that; it just kind of snowballed.

AS FAR AS CUSTOMIZING THEM, WHAT GOT YOU STARTED WITH THAT?

Ever since I was little I liked stuff that was different, it just went from there, ya know? Making them look different or one of a kind other than factory... that was from the very beginning I guess. We did sport bikes for a long time, and now the big popular thing is these Harley Baggers, and that's all we do now, really.

WHAT'S ONE OF YOUR FAVORITES THAT YOU'VE DONE?

Um, usually I like 'em all. I guess my personal bikes would be my favorite, which I have a few.

SO HOW MANY DO YOU PERSONALLY OWN?

Probably like 15.

DO YOU DO EVERYTHING HERE? (THE SHOP IN GREENSBORO NC)

Yeah, we do most everything in house. Some paint stuff we send out just because we have so many to do, ya know, one person can't do it ALL. And things like chrome plating or powder coating we send out, but we do everything in house.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO DO A BIKE?

Every bike is different.

SO IT JUST DEPENDS ON WHAT THEY WANT?

Yeah, it depends on how complex or different it is. A simple build probably 4 to 6 weeks, on something a little more radical, 6 - 12. Something really one-off it can take a year. Stuff that's really different seems to take longer.

HOW MANY BIKES DO YOU THINK YOU'VE DONE OVER THE YEARS?

Altogether we've probably worked on over 500 bikes, maybe more than that.

I mean, right now at this time we're doing, I think, 35 of them. I've got four other people that help me, and without help it would never happen. We definitely do them faster than most people, and we do a lot more than most people would do, we do a lot of volume.

WHAT TYPE OF ADVERTISING DO YOU GUYS DO?

None.

JUST WORD OF MOUTH?

Yeah, you know social media is really about the only advertising. We have a lot of followers with that. And then it's just word of mouth, you know we'll do a bike for one guy and then we'll do three bikes for his friends, three bikes for those guys' friends... we have a lot of repeat customers too.

YOU DO BIKES FOR PEOPLE ALL OVER (THE COUNTRY)?

Yeah, we do bikes all over the country. Right now I know I have 3 bikes from Ohio, 1 from Florida, 1 from Oklahoma, 2 from New York, I have a couple from South Carolina, there's a few from North Carolina as well...

but they come from all over. I've done several bikes for people in California, Texas, Florida, Ohio, NY, and we've shipped them overseas before. Bikes that were already done, customers have bought them and shipped them overseas.

YOU MAKE CUSTOM WHEELS TOO?

Yeah, we deal with a machine shop that makes some of our own line of wheels, and we sell everybody else's too. We have about 5 designs of wheels right now, we're working on other ones. Like that green wheel (featured with model Paige) is ours.

Thank you for taking the time for this interview, and showing off some of your cool bikes with our hot models!

2016 INDIAN CHIEF DARK HORSE

The 2016 models are starting to roll out! First one to show up is the 2016 Indian ® Chief Dark Horse®. Starting at $16,999 the newest Indian Chief is built for tough riding. It has the same frame and suspension as the Chief Classic, as well as the powerful Thunder Stroke® III, but not many other similarities. The Dark Horse does not come equipped with the analogue fuel gauge, driving lights, and oil cooler. This is truly an aggressive solo cruiser, although you can accessorize to have a two-person rider. Swiftness is a key trait in the new Dark Horse, but customizability also is favored. The standard is a bold, matte black, unpolished look with just a "flash" of chrome. If you prefer the unpolished look, there are matte black accessories so you can truly have a dark, understated, but striking cruiser.

SENA 20S BLUETOOTH SYSTEM

Sena is well-known for high quality products that work well, and the 20S Bluetooth communication system is no different. The Sena 20S has voice commands, group intercom functions, built-in FM radio, and other many cool features, some you will probably forget about until you read through the manual. Don't forget about the Sena smartphone App for Android and iPhone! That will also help you in controlling your device.

As with other communicators, the quality of your helmet may interfere with the quality you experience from this device. In other words, the better your helmet, the better experience you will have with the Sena 20S.

The Sena 20S is an 8-way multi-intercom. Previous models only had up to 4, so this is a great improvement and will be better for larger riding groups. You can pair your Sena 20S with up to 9 Bluetooth devices - WOW.

That gives you so many options, with GPS, music, phone calls, communicating with others in your group, etc. Sena also claims you can get up to 13 hours of talk time and 10 days of standby time with this model, an improvement over previous versions.

You can get a single kit or a dual kit which contains two complete units. Each kit includes a wired mic, additional wired boom mic, a stick-on helmet mount, USB cable, an auxillary cable, an accessory outlet charger, ear pocket pads, and hook-and-loop stickers for speakers.

The Sena 20S also has a distance of intercom for up to 1.2 miles, or 2 kilometers. (This measurement is for open terrain, and can't be expected to perform the same under different conditions.)

Updating the Firmware

When you first get your 20S, the very first thing you need to do is download the most recent Sena Device Manager and install it on your computer. Then you want to make sure to install the most recent firmware update for your Sena 20S. Some of the features are still a little buggy at times, and Sena is dilligent about fixing them and providing updates regularly.
